Herbal Medicine and the Menopause
What is Herbal Medicine?
Herbal medicine – the use of plants to treat illness and improve health – is the oldest and most widely used form of medicine in the world. If you’ve ever rubbed a dock leaf on a nettle sting, or had a cup of chamomile tea to help you sleep, you’ve used herbal medicine.
How does it work?
Today, modern science is beginning to explain how many herbal remedies work. Professional herbalists combine this understanding with traditional knowledge to provide a safe and realistic alternative to conventional medicine. Herbal medicine can be used instead of, or along side, conventional treatment, and is largely free from the side effects so common with pharmaceutical drugs. It is suitable for most women experiencing symptoms of the menopause, including those who have taken HRT in the past, and those whose menopause has been surgically induced.
How can Herbal Medicine help with Menopause?
Treatment begins with an in depth 90-minute consultation, which is a chance to explore your symptoms, understand how they are affecting your life, and get a picture of your general health. At the end of this time our herbalist formulates and dispenses your herbal prescription, designed to tackle your particular symptoms.

If you are exhausted from being woken every night by drenching sweats, for example, you may be prescribed black cohosh(1), sage(2), or both to cool you down and reduce the sweating. Other herbs are used as needed for symptoms such as aches and pains, poor concentration or dry skin.
How long does the treatment last?
You should notice a significant improvement within two weeks of starting treatment. The total length of treatment needed varies from one woman to the next, with some needing just a few months, while others may need to continue with herbal medicines for two or three years until their menopause has run its course.
Some herbal medicines can affect the way that conventional drugs work. If you are taking prescriptions medicines you should bring them with you to the first consultation so that our herbalist can ensure that they will continue to work safely alongside your herbal prescription.
The herbal medicines come in liquid form and are easy to take – generally just a teaspoon three times a day. They are free from unwanted side effects.
Note:
Many of the the herbal tinctures contain alcohol and therefore may be unsuitable for anyone who needs to totally abstain from alcohol. If you would like to discuss this further Natalia will be happy to speak to you before commencing treatment. |
