Nutritional Therapy and the Menopause
“The menopause should be seen in a positive light as a natural transition from one phase of a woman’s life to the next, rather than as an illness encompassing a variety of unpleasant symptoms. Whilst some women sail through the menopause almost totally symptom-free, for others it can be a particularly difficult and challenging time of their lives.” Angela Bailey
What is Nutritional Therapy?
Nutritional therapy is about much more than just healthy eating or weight management. It can have far-reaching, beneficial effects on a wide range of health conditions.
Our bodies are highly dependent on a myriad of nutrients and micronutrients. Imbalances or shortages of these key nutrients can cause a range of vague but worrying symptoms, from low energy, persistent colds and infections, aches and pains, to more major complaints.
Nutritional therapists analyse lifestyle and diet and, where appropriate, use a range of laboratory tests to diagnose imbalances and deficiencies.
From this, a personalised, negotiated individual plan can be implemented, comprising lifestyle and dietary recommendations, with a programme for high quality supplements.
How does it work? |
|
It is important to identify and treat the cause of your symptoms, rather than the symptoms themselves, many of which are all too familiar – hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, weight gain, reduced libido, depression, anxiety, poor energy levels and concerns about osteoporosis.
Initially, you will be asked to complete a comprehensive health and diet questionnaire, which can be e-mailed to you when you book an appointment - simply contact one of our receptionists.
As part of your consultation, at a small additional cost, you may wish to take advantage of our advanced health-screen test, using the latest bioelectrical impedance measurement equipment, to help identify imbalances in the different systems of the body.
This non-invasive process will provide additional information about your body to help with the formulation of your programme and to highlight supplements that will be useful in dealing with your symptoms.
How can Nutritional Therapy help with Menopause?
A good diet incorporating a wide variety of health-giving nutrients is a crucial element, if you wish to be pro-active in managing your own menopausal symptoms. Our nutritional therapist, Angela Bailey, is here to assess your current diet and lifestyle, together with your particular range of symptoms.
Angela will negotiate your nutritional programme with you and whilst it will specifically tailored to your individual needs, the aim is for it to be realistic and achievable for you, so that you can follow your new dietary regime over the long-term, rather than abandon it after just a few weeks.
We also offer a range of other tests that complement the advanced health screen test. These are laboratory tests and include:
- osteoporosis risk assessment test
- hair mineral analysis
- adrenal stress test
- full thyroid screen
- menopause profile
- detoxification profile.
How long does the treatment last?
Following an hour-long initial consultation, Angela can help you to make beneficial adjustments to your diet and eating habits, to help clear or minimise the symptoms you wish to address.
Generally, there would be a further session of 45 minutes after 3-4 weeks, to review and ensure that you are happy with your plan and that it’s working for you.

As part of your nutritional consultation, why not include a test with my Bioelectrical Impedance Measurement (BIM) machine to help investigate further the possible cause of your health problems? There is a small additional cost for this, but the results of the test will give a much greater insight into where the imbalances are in your body.

Nutritional Therapy
Research shows that good nutrition is the foundation to our health and wellbeing. I work in a tailored way, developing plans that suit the individual and that are realistic and practical with people's busy lives.
Your Consultation
Prior to your first appointment, you will be asked to complete a health and wellbeing questionnaire, which takes about 15 minutes. By reviewing your past and current health concerns, your lifestyle and your eating habits, a full picture of your health can be obtained.
The aim is to establish the root cause of your symptoms and to understand your main health goals. Hormone or vitamin tests may be arranged if appropriate, along with nutritional supplements.
A tailored plan can then be agreed together, with all the support you need. Many people benefit from a follow up consultation to monitor their progress and agree any new goals.
